When asked whether she thinks the industry has changed, she said, “Oh my gosh, yes! Ariana (DeBose), who plays Anita, is already on her second movie, I think. Moreno is celebrating 70 years in the industry and is one of only six women to have EGOT status, having won Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony awards. Because I didn’t see a lot of the people who were in it get that much work either, including the Jets,” she said, referring to one of the two gangs in the film. “I just didn’t realize … my daughter says this now, ‘You know what that movie was then? That was a one-off.’” Moreno paused and whispered, “Boy, did she get that right. “And I was turning them down and I find myself not working. It was painful because all I could get as an offer was to do some more gang movies on a lesser scale,” Moreno shared. However, after her iconic win, she was still being offered stereotypical Latina roles and almost gave up on movies because opportunities were so limited. My God, I don’t know when I’ve ever said that before!”įor the original film, Moreno became the first, and still only, Latina to win an acting Oscar. “Isn’t she a wonderful character? Don’t you love her?” she said in a video interview. The Puerto Rico-born actress plays Valentina, widow of Doc, who ran the sweet shop in the original movie, and is in awe of her character. Now, 60 years later, she stars in Spielberg’s remake of the beloved Broadway musical in a new role that was created just for her. Moreno played the unforgettable role of Puerto Rican immigrant Anita in the 1961 “West Side Story,” earning her an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.
